Phew…thanks National Rail

It’s so easy to knock anything to do with rail travel in the UK, whether it be prices, delays, conditions of the trains but there have been two rays of light whilst recently planning a trip to London.
The first of these is Thetrainline.com. I know it’s being going a while now, but I’d never used it before and using it combined with the recent knowledge that buying a ticket to Peterborough and then a separate ticket from Peterborough to London actually produces a price for the whole journey that seems fair made me feel like I may yet increase my average number of train journeys per year from 0.62 to 0.89.
Don’t buy a train ticket for a medium to long journey anywhere else than online – it’s that simple. You don’t even have to get them posted to you as the network of machines at stations where you can collect your tickets is actually pretty impressive. I was able to pick mine up at Selby….
…which leads me on to the second enjoyable part of my recent trip. While planning the trip and using Trainline and National Rail website I was drawn to the fact that there is now a route planner that helps you learn how to get about the station you are travelling from…and yes, there is one for Selby with all 3 of its platforms!
So, here is how to get from the main entrance at Selby station to platform 1 through the gift of nationalrail.co.uk:-
It gets better though. Remember that single tiny ‘step’ from the second picture? Well, the route planner (quite rightly) lets a user state whether using steps is a problem….This time I selected ‘no’ for using steps:
